mill/shaker care
Mills and shakers should not only be useful; they should enhance the decor of your kitchen or table top while you prepare a meal or enjoy it with family or friends.
Each handmade wooden bowl or pepper & salt mill continues to breathe, even after it has been turned, sanded and finished. For best results if the bowl, vessel, grinder, etc. gets dirty, wash with a damp cloth and hand dry with a terry cloth dishtowel. Be sure to keep the grinder mechanism dry.
The follow-ing will help maintain your mill (or shaker) in top condition for years to come and, hopefully, enhance your enjoyment of it.
MILLS
-
Each mill can be used for pepper, salt, or a number of other dry spices as desired; the grinder mechanism is ceramic and will not corrode or rust.
-
To add more spice, gently pull off the top and pour in the desired amount; then push the top back onto the grinder shaft.
-
Adjust the “coarse-ness” of the pepper/salt, etc. by twisting the grey knob on the bottom of the mill while holding the top - counter-clockwise for coarse, clockwise for fine.
-
The finish on your mill is a wipe on polyurethane; to clean, just wipe it off with a damp cloth and allow to dry; be careful not to allow water into the mechanism.
-
If for some reason, your mill squeaks when you turn it, take the top off, clean off any salt or pepper “dust” and rub a little bees wax on the part of the top that fits into the mill bottom; this should cure most squeaking.
SHAKERS
-
To add salt to your shaker, gently remove the rubber stopper on the bottom of the shaker, pour in the salt while covering the metal shaker (on the top) to minimize spilling; re-insert the stopper into the hole with a firm press of your thumb.
-
As for the mill (above), the finish on your shaker is wipe on polyurethane; to clean, just wipe off the shaker with a damp cloth and allow to dry; be careful not to allow water into the shaker as salt will tend to “clump-up” and clog the metal shaker head.
